It’s hard to get a good picture- the cistern is about 10 feet deep and 6 feet across- and frankly it makes me really nervous to lean over it. It is round and made of stone with a smooth mortar finish. I suspect it was built with the house in 1902 and the woodshed addition was built partly over it sometime soon after.
This means the addition that we want to renovate is partly over this underground chamber. Can you imagine how much work this must have been to build? Ten feet deep in sandy soil!
It’s hard to get a good photo- I can see pretty well with a flashlight but can’t seem to turn that into a good shot. I am not afraid of heights, not afraid of ladders, but leaning over this pit makes me really nervous- if you fell in you would never climb out.
